ULTRA-DISTANCE CHALLENGES

The Yorkshire Round                                                 More Ultra Routes

This could be described as Yorkshire’s answer to the Bob Graham Round!  The object is to ascend twenty of the two-thousand foot summits which lie on or within the county boundary of North Yorkshire by starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale.  It involves some 85 miles and climbing 17000 feet within a 24 hour limit.  What it lacks in ascent is more than made up for in distance and arduous Yorkshire terrain!  The route is, in fact, a reduced version of a more formidable 115 mile Yorkshire two-thousands route which devised by Peter Barker of Harrogate and first completed in 1982.  The Yorkshire Round was devised by Tony Wimbush using the more recent Nuttall’s summit lists and was inaugurated by Tony Wimbush and Colin Brooke in 1994 in 23 hours 23 minutes.  The basic round may be extended to include Water Crag and Rogan’s Seat north of Swaledale.
